Letters of Administration for the Estate of James McCarter
December 2, 1818
On November 28, 1818 James McCarter died intestate in New York City. His wife, Elizabeth, turned over the administration of his estate to his brother, Arthur on December 2.
Evidence points to Elizabeth having been estranged from James for years, which is bolstered by her turning over the estate matters to Arthur and mistakenly listing James's occupation as wheelwright rather an millwrignt.
Renunciation of Elizabeth McCarter

Know all men by these Presents That I, Elizabeth McCarter, the Widow of James McCarter of New York Wheelwright, deceased, do hereby renounce all my right to take the letters of administration on the estate of my said husband and pray the surrogate of said City to grant the same to Aurthur McCarter a brother of said deceased. In whitness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 2 day of December 1818.

The People of the State of New York, BY THE GRACE OF GOD FREE AND INDEPENDENT TO Arthur McCarter a brother of James McCarter late of the City of New York, Mill Wright, deceased
Send Greeting: WHEREAS the said James McCarter at the time of his death, was an inhabitant of this city, and, as is alleged, lately died intestate, having whilst living, and at the time of his death, goods, chattels, or credits within this state, by means whereof the ordering and granting administration of all and singular the said goods, chattels, and credits, and also the auditing, allowing, and final discharging the account thereof, doth appertain unto us: and we being desirous that the goods, chattels, and credits of the said deceased may be well and faithfully administered, applied, and disposed of, do grant unto you the said Arthur McCarter full power by these presents, to administer and faithfully dispose of all and singular the said goods, chattels, and credits; to ask, demand, recover, and receive the debts which unto the said deceased whilst living, and at the time of his death, did belong; and to pay the debts which the said deceased did owe, as far as such goods, chattels, and credits will thereto extend, and the law require; hereby requiring you to make, or cause to be made, a true and perfect inventory of all and singular the goods, chattels, and credits of the said deceased, which shall or have come to your hands, possession, or knowledge; and the same so made to exhibit, or cause to be exhibited, into the office of the Surrogate of the said county of New-York, at or before the expiration of six calendar months from the date hereof; and also to render a just and true account of administration, when thereunto required: And we do by these presents depute, constitute, and appoint you the said Arthur McCarter Administrator of all and singular the goods, chattels, and credits which were of the said James McCarter.
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, we have caused the seal of office of our said Surrogate to be hereunto affixed.
WITNESS Silvanus Miller, Esquire, Surrogate of the said county, at the city of New York, the fifth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighteen and of our Independence the forty third.
